One of the very few apps that make me happy I switched from an Android device to an iOS device. Simple, performative, and polished.
Great dictionary, use it all the time. People who complain about its “incompleteness” are just complainers who are always in the need to complain about anything, or their day is not a success, is incomplete (“Polis” give me a break!). I love it, and LOVE the fact that it doesn’t have any bells & whistles to muddle it up. A must have for any Writer.
This dictionary is a got to have for older English works and I really enjoy using it with my Bible. I rely on it more than I ever thought I would.
Words such as “polis” are not included. So what’s the use?
Provides not only a literal definition, but a contextual one along with connotations associated with the word in history. For example, looking up a simple definition of the word "fire" in a regular dictionary would yield: The phenomenon of combustion manifested in light, flame, and heat. Of course a regular dictionary would also provide other definitions such as burning passion, liveliness of imagination, and firearms. This dictionary, on the other hand, will provide the same definitions, among many others with notes such as: Anciently, fire, air, earth, and water were regarded as the four elements of which all things are composed. Splendor; brilliancy; luster; hence, a star. Intellectual and moral enthusiasm; capacity for ardor and zeal. A lovely, reliable, pocket writer's dictionary. A true companion, a gem. It's nice to have a friend.
I am exceedingly fond (in the modern, not the original, sense) of this dictionary. I use it for everyday word look up but depend on it even more to understand the meanings of words in the 19th or even 17th century. Thanks to the authors of the dictionary and the application!
1. Linking words 2. Dark mode Well done otherwise! Worth a dollar
Every third or fourth word I type in cannot be found by this dictionary. I use it primarily for words in English books I read.
Although it’s an ok site, allowing to hear the pronunciation of words would make this app outstanding.
The widget now usually does not show a sufficient excerpt of a definition. E.g. today for EMERALD it displays the word plus three and a third lines, which severely cuts off “2. (Print.).” Can the widget possibly resize to show a bit more and resize not to cut off lines?
Very disappointed in the word of the day. Rudimentary doesn’t even begin to describe the words everyday. Opera. Whistle. It is almost funny.
The dictionary is solid, easy to read, and doesn’t contain more contentious entries. That less strict dictionaries may. There are a few graphical glitches I wanted to point out but the feedback option launches the iOS Mail app. I don’t use that so I have no way of knowing what the dev’s email address is.
This is the only app I use daily. The only one.
If you are looking for a modern, updated list of words, with grammatical analysis and technical information, there are plenty of other fine apps available for that. If, however, you are a worshipper at the house of language, you have found your hymnal.
I have had or used many dictionary apps, and they all have their strengths and weaknesses. But this one is a piece of literature all on its own. I read it for the sheer pleasure of it. The definitions make old and familiar words new— like poetry.
So happy to find Webster's 1913 as an app. Been having a great time exploring words with it!
Very unique, a beautiful execution. This is a 'dictionary' in a basic sense, or rather classic or older way. For those who enjoy the rich potential of the English lexicon and wish to grow in it. And avoid ridiculous modern additions. It's a delight for wordsmiths, real or aspiring. And for readers. If you like to read dictionaries you'll love this!, there are full sentences and only minor blurs of tech info. You get a fuller knowledge of a word through reading and examples - not by reading a list of short single phrases separated by numbers and codes. I hope it is maintained! It's quite a great piece of work. Thank you to the dev.
Really fun to browse through
I love the Dictionary app that comes with MacOS and always wanted a similar simple app for iOS. I understand that the content of this app comes from 1913 version of Webster's dictionary, so obviously there will be some entries that are culturally, or scientifically outdated by 100 years, so use that as a commonsense filter for what words your looking up. For me, a couple things preventing 5 star rating: - on iPhone 7 form factor, some headings for long words go over the edge of the page instead of hyphenating - I wish that in definition pages words were linked so you could directly jump to a new page rather than searching.
I can't contain my happiness in the discovery of this dictionary via a reference to it on a blog post. What a wonderful contribution to anyone interested in writing or merely playing with words.
Sorry - For an English Dictionary, needs a lot of work. Spelling errors and lack of explanation of templates used within its own work. Basic grammar words lack simple definitions. Needs complete rework of grammar words first. Suggest adding "Parts of Speech" into it. A speaker for sound of each word that can be used off line.
The best app for the 1914 version of Webster's Unabridged Dictionary I could find on the App Store. Beautifully designed, simple, no ads. Truly a pleasure to use.

Using the older version of Webster's Dictionary to draw definitions from was a great idea. The language used in the older versions convey meaning in a much more profound way then the more modern versions.
It's a great app for writers. I gives me lots of options for words. Thank you!
I seriously love his dictionary. It not only explains what words mean but gives in-depth examples and expounds on the vocabulary. Beautifully done and so helpful. Way more helpful than we esters and would recommend it over it. Timeless and classic, with a look back into the intricacies of an old era where men knew exactly what they said when they said it.

Amazing that they made an app I absolutely love it:D
If you are an English major don't bother with this word list collection. Give me back the Websters I paid for please!
I wish dictionaries were still written this way. Beautiful language...
A delight to use and to explore, especially when writing about an era that matches the original Webster source.
This is not just a dictionary to find the meaning of words, but rather a tool to improve one's writing. Many writers now use this dictionary to find more creative way to express their words.
this app is more better than a lot paid dictionaries
I'd better start looking up words to write a presentable review.
